Opioids: The Making of a Crisis

The opioid epidemic has caught the country off guard, draining resources which were designed to address the problem. Alarmed federal and state agencies are scrambling to address the problem. But it is the communities that have borne the brunt of the opioid crisis. Communities blame the pharmaceutical companies that have, since the 1980s, promoted opioids as a panacea for relieving pain. This workshop informs participants about the various forms of narcotics and opioids, their prevalence, effects on the physical and psychological well-being of users, and examines the events that contributed to the crisis, and failed attempts to deal with it.

Title and Objectives:

A failure to launch NOT a moral failure: Addressing slips, lapse, relapse and recycling in recovery.

This workshop will examine the difficulties of initiating and sustaining change in recovery.  We will explore how slips, lapses and relapse fit into the process of change, how to integrate them into treatment, and how to destigmatize these obstacles to sustaining change. Launching successful recovery is similar to successfully launching a rocket with careful attention needing to be paid to every aspect of the launch.  Understanding the obstacles and debriefing the experiences of clients is critical to supporting recovery. Participants will be encouraged to discuss slip, lapse and relapse personal and client experiences and to find approaches to address these recovery challenges.
